From the President, December 2012
To Our Supporters
Dear Library Foundation Supporter,

As we move into the holiday season and take stock of the blessings our children and families have been privileged to enjoy, I hope you count books and the gift of reading among them. Unfortunately, that’s not an advantage every child experiences, and the impact is devastating. By supporting the Sacramento Public Library Foundation this holiday season, you can help eliminate this disadvantage.

Consider two children: one who is born into a middle class family with the time, books, and resources to read to their child, the other child whose family is focused simply on paying the rent and day-to-day survival. By the time these children reach kindergarten, the child who is ready to read will have heard more than 80 million words, compared to 30 million for the less fortunate child.

We have libraries full of books and places for children to be, to look, to play and to thrive. We have places where parents can learn how to support their children’s development and help their kids learn about their world. We have high-quality summer learning through the Library’s summer reading program that helps children hold onto their reading levels out of school while teaching them the joy of reading.

Think of how the Library served you, your children, and grandchildren. Your support now can expand programs that reach out and draw parents and children into the library. Your donations can help overcome disadvantage and help every child in our community have a literate and full life.
Sincerely,

Nancy Lawrence
President
